Expo 2020 Dubai in Numbers
- Expo 2020 Dubai expects to welcome 25 million visits between October 2020 and April 2021, equivalent to welcoming the population of Australia through its gates in only six months
- Expo 2020 expects to attract more visits than the combined number of tickets sold for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, the London 2012 Summer Olympics, the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil and the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics
- Expo 2020 expects to attract approximately 16 times the number of spectators who attended the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia
- About 70 per cent of visitors to Expo 2020 are expected to come from outside the UAE, the largest proportion of international visitors in more than a century and a half of World Expos
- Expo 2020 will host approximately 60 events per day for 173 consecutive days
- More than 200 participants will take part in Expo 2020 Dubai, including nations, multilateral organisations, businesses and educational institutions
- More than 170 countries have confirmed their participation in Expo 2020 Dubai, either publicly or privately

WORKFORCE AND VOLUNTEERS
- Between 20,000 and 35,000 people will work at the Expo site each day during the six months of the event
- More than 30,000 volunteers – both UAE nationals and expats – will help to deliver Expo 2020
- More than 600 people are directly employed by Expo 2020 Dubai
- More than 60 nationalities are represented in the Expo 2020 team
- Nearly 130 people under the age of 30 work for Expo
- Women make up 51 per cent of the Expo workforce
FOOD AND BEVERAGE (F&B)
- The Expo site will feature more than 200 F&B outlets
- More than 50 million meal occasions are expected to be served during Expo 2020, and visitors will be able to view, order and pay for their food and beverages online via a smart phone app
- Up to 500,000 meals will be served during a peak day at Expo 2020
- Approximately 5 million meals will be needed to fuel the Expo workforce during the six months of the event
- Expo 2020 expects to generate about AED 2 billion (USD 544.5 million) in total F&B sales
AL WASL PLAZA AND THEMATIC DISTRICTS
- Al Wasl Plaza’s steel trellis dome covers an area the size of 16 tennis courts and weighs as much as 500 elephants
- At 67.5 metres in height, Al Wasl Plaza’s dome is more than 10 metres taller than Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa
- At 130 metres in diameter, Al Wasl Plaza’s dome is almost wide enough to fit two Airbus A380s across its centre, wing to wing
- Expo 2020’s three Thematic Districts will feature more than 180 country pavilions, showcasing unique architecture, culture and exhibits from around the world
- The Opportunity Pavilion’s striking, spiral-shaped canopy will be made from 111 kilometres of woven rope, enough to stretch from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah
- The 320-metre track that runs around the Mobility Pavilion will allow millions of visitors to see cutting-edge mobility devices in action
- The Sustainability Pavilion has the capacity to host 30,000 people in a single day, more than the average number of people who visit the Eiffel Tower during the same period
SUSTAINABILITY
- Expo 2020’s goal is for 85 per cent of all waste – including municipal solid waste, construction waste and decommissioning waste – to be segregated to allow for treatment and diversion from landfill
- Smart building strategies will reduce power consumption by 20 per cent, or 150,000 MWh, during the six months of Expo – enough to meet the energy requirements of 11,000 UAE residents for an entire year
- Expo 2020’s legacy buildings are designed to use 57 per cent less potable water than conventional buildings – enough to fill 117 Olympic-size swimming pools every year
- The Sustainability Pavilion will use renewable sources to produce up to 4GWh of energy per year, enough to charge more than 900,000 mobile phones
LEGACY DEVELOPMENT AND IMPACT
- More than 26,000 suppliers from 151 countries have registered to do business on Expo 2020 Dubai’s eSourcing Portal
- Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been awarded 56 per cent of Expo contracts to date
- Post-Expo, the site will be transformed into District 2020, a world-class integrated community that will reuse 80 per cent of Expo’s built environment
- Expo 2020 Dubai’s innovation and partnership programme Expo Live has an allocation of USD 100 million to support innovative solutions to pressing global challenges
- Expo Live’s flagship Innovation Impact Grant Programme has already awarded grants of up to USD 100,000 each, plus guidance and exposure, to 70 Global Innovators from 42 countries
- Expo Live’s University Innovation Programme awarded grants of up to AED 25,000 each to 19 teams of students from UAE universities during its first cycle
- About 80 per cent of young Emiratis who have graduated from Expo 2020’s apprenticeship programme have gone on to secure full-time positions within the organisation
- The Expo School Programme has reached nearly 40,000 students from 620 schools in all seven emirates, and hopes to engage many more young people on the journey to 2020
CONSTRUCTION AND LOGISTICS
- To date, more than 44 million work hours have been completed at the Expo 2020 site
- Approximately 37,000 people are currently working on the Expo site
- In H1 2019 at the peak of construction, about 40,000 workers – both manual and non-manual – are expected on site, including employees of third-party stakeholders and participating countries
- All concrete works for the Thematic Districts have now been completed, with about 243,000 cubic metres of concrete poured
- The value of the contract secured by Al Futtaim Carillion to construct Expo’s three Thematic Districts was AED 2.2 billion (USD 599 million)
- Expo’s on-site nursery is currently home to about 13,000 mature trees and about 300,000 shrubs
